The Artificial Intelligence (AI) landscape in Italy is transforming rapidly, marking record growth while facing new challenges.
According to the 2024 edition of the Artificial Intelligence Observatory of the School of Management of the Politecnico di Milano, the AI market in Italy has grown 52 percent to 760 million euros. This momentum is largely driven by large enterprises, which account for 90 percent of the market, while there is a more timid adoption by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), with only 18 percent having started AI experiments.
Investments are mainly concentrated in areas such as text analysis and interpretation, semantic search, and conversational agents, with generative AI attracting increasing interest despite constituting only 5 percent of investments. We are facing a turning point: six out of 10 large enterprises have begun to explore the potential of AI, highlighting the existence of an active debate on applications of generative AI.
Corporate maturity in the AI adoption journey varies widely:
- only 11 percent of large organizations rank as vanguard, again according to the survey conducted by the Artificial Intelligence Observatory of the School of Management of the Politecnico di Milano, fully mature in AI adoption
- while a significant share remain in the early stages of the journey
This disparity is even more pronounced in SMEs, where the advent of generative AI has not yet unleashed a significant wave of experimentation compared to large companies.
What is the impact of artificial intelligence on society?
In this scenario, the role of the scientific community, institutions, and business advisors becomes crucial in guiding the adoption process of AI and generative AI, addressing challenges related to the robustness, explainability, and regulatory compliance of AI systems.
As pointed out by the Politecnico di Milano, it is critical not only to guide businesses through the technological maze, but also to ensure that the benefits of AI are equitably distributed across society.
The 2024 edition of the Artificial Intelligence Observatory of the School of Management of the Politecnico di Milano provides an important current snapshot of the AI market in Italy, but it also invites deep reflection on the future of AI, the importance of responsible innovation, and how companies, large and small, can successfully navigate this evolving landscape.

- 22% for algorithms that suggest content to customers in line with individual preferences
- 10% video and image analysis
- 7% Process orchestration systems
