India and Vietnam: comparing markets
Success for the conference “India and Vietnam: hub for new competitiveness in Southeast Asia” in Bologna.
The conference “India and Vietnam: hubs for new competitiveness in Southeast Asia” was held on March 25 at the Sidney Hotel in Bologna, organized by Roncucci&Partners, a leading consulting firm in internationalization processes, in collaboration with BNL BNP Paribas Territory Italy Center North.
The event highlighted the growing importance of Southeast Asian markets as new frontiers for international business. Special focus was devoted to India and Vietnam: the former, now the most populous country in the world and at the center of strong industrialization; the latter, considered a strategic hub for accessing the entire area.
Introducing the proceedings was Giovanni Roncucci, who offered an in-depth geopolitical analysis of the two markets, emphasizing the opportunities and risks associated with these contexts. Next, the floor was passed to distinguished guests such as representatives of SIMEST and Club Asia, who brought further contributions on the dynamics of internationalization.
New frontiers for international business
When it comes to new frontiers for business in Southeast Asia, India and Vietnam represent two very different but both extremely promising scenarios.
- India emerges as a global economic giant: with a population that has surpassed 1.4 billion, it offers an endless domestic market and a young and growing workforce. Its GDP continues to see sustained rates of growth, driven by sectors such as IT, pharmaceuticals, automotive, manufacturing and infrastructure. Government initiatives such as the Make in India program are also fostering a more open climate for foreign investment, although critical issues related to bureaucracy and some complexity in the regulatory system remain. For an Italian company, India is a strategic opportunity for those wishing to focus on scale, innovation and long-term presence.
- Although Vietnam has a smaller population size (about 100 million), it stands out for the dynamism and speed with which it is integrating into global markets. With a rapidly expanding middle class and some of the highest GDP growth in the region, the country has transformed itself into a major manufacturing and logistics hub. Its strategic geographic location, numerous international trade agreements and competitive labor costs make it ideal as a platform to access not only the domestic market but also the entire ASEAN region. However, the regulatory system is constantly changing, and foreign competition is increasingly intense.
Final thoughts
In summary, while India offers the attractiveness of a huge and rapidly developing industrial market, Vietnam presents itself as a nimble and competitive base for those seeking quick and secure entry into Asian markets. In both cases, approaching these markets with a well-thought-out strategy and the support of experienced partners proves to be an indispensable element for success.
Such reasoning then was corroborated by the company testimonials in the room: Marco Polo Foodex, which, thanks to Simest’s financial support, has managed to establish a solid presence in Vietnam in the Italian meat and food sector, and Giuliani S.p.A., Mantua-based excellence in the production of mechanical cylinders, which has inaugurated its second production plant in India.
Finally, the final considerations were entrusted to Roberto Pondrelli, Territorial Director of BNL BNP Paribas, who stressed that the approach to these markets must be strategic and well-planned: it is essential not to improvise, but to rely on expert structures and consultants with solid networks of contacts and concrete experience in the field.
The conference confirmed how India and Vietnam represent extraordinary opportunities for Italian companies ready to invest with vision and expertise in the future of the global economy.
