China 2024: sustainability and innovation the pillars of the future

26 June 2024

Last month saw the presentation of the first part of the Annual Report “China 2024” published by the Italy China Foundation (ICCF) Study Center and now in its 15th edition.

As it does every year, the report offers a clear and in-depth view of China’s economic dynamics and the opportunities this vast market presents for Italian companies, this year with a specific focus on two very hot topics globally: sustainability and innovation.

China and its economic resilience

Analyzing the data for 2023, despite the period of geopolitical uncertainty, China demonstrates remarkable economic resilience with GDP growth of 5.2 percent that continues into the first quarter of 2024 with 5.3 percent. Indeed, in recent years, China has witnessed a significant economic transformation, moving away from its image as simply a low-cost manufacturing center to emerge as a leader in technologically advanced sectors, with significant investment in areas such as artificial intelligence, biomedicine, and quantum mechanics.

Regarding the sectors to be taken into account for those planning to invest in China, the Report highlights which ones have shown significant growth in the last year; these include healthcare, with particular reference to drugs and medical devices, and chemicals but also automotive, thanks to the development of electric vehicles, and tourism. Despite the exit from the New Silk Road initiative, bilateral relations between Italy and China remain strong, promoted by institutional mechanisms such as the Italy-China Joint Economic Commission and the Business Dialogue Forum that promote cooperation in priority sectors, including agribusiness, e-commerce, investment, pharmaceutical and biomedical.

In 2023, the main Italian products exported to China were pharmaceutical and chemical-medical items (4.4 billion euros), followed by textiles, clothing, leather and accessories (4 billion euros, +14%, especially leather items, +24.5%) and machinery (3.7 billion euros, +1%). In terms of exports, 63 percent originated from northern regions, 33 percent from central regions and a total of 4 percent from southern and island regions.

Sustainability: a pillar of Chinese policies

One of the most promising areas for investment is related to sustainable products. Indeed, Chinese consumer demand for eco-friendly products is growing, with 57 percent of the population willing to pay more for environmentally friendly products.

Sustainability has become a key pillar of Chinese policies in which people are encouraged to purchase goods and services with a low environmental impact. This represents an opportunity for Italian companies, especially those active in green technologies and renewable energy.

Sustainability management is not just a matter of regulatory compliance. Companies that demonstrate a strong commitment to ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) criteria can attract investment more easily and on better terms. In fact, the Chinese financial market is rewarding companies with high ESG performance with lower interest rates on loans and bonds.

Economic resilience, technological advances and a commitment to sustainability paint a promising picture, but not without challenges. Italian companies willing to invest in China must be prepared to understand and adapt to an ever-changing environment, seizing the opportunities presented by growing sectors and strategic initiatives. China is a sophisticated market that demands high-quality and innovative products. In particular, e-commerce is a crucial platform for reaching Chinese consumers, with business models ranging from B2B to B2C, offering endless possibilities for expansion.

There is also a need to adopt targeted strategies, analyze the supply chain to assess ESG performance to ensure compliance with local and international regulations, and clearly communicate sustainability actions taken through detailed reports and targeted campaigns, using specialized local agencies to avoid cultural errors.

By taking a strategic approach and committing to sustainable practices, Italian companies will not only be able to expand their business, but also contribute positively to China’s sustainable development.
